Passmore and Skinner lead Monster Cat Quest on Santee Cooper

Day one is in the books at the Santee Cooper Monster Cat Quest out of Black’s Camp, Cross, SC. The tournament, now in its third year, attracted 177 boats to fish the popular Santee Cooper waters where big Arkansas blue catfish are plentiful.

Anglers started the day under beautiful weather conditions. Extremely light winds and mild temperatures made early fishing comfortable and easy. That weather faded as the morning progressed. By mid-morning anglers were fighting heavy winds in choppy waters.

Anglers were allowed to fish either of the two Santee Cooper lakes and bring a total of 4 fish per day, per boat. The legally they could bring in two fish over 36 inches and two fish under 36 inches.

Day one leaders are  Team Kitty Tickler, Michael Passmore and Joshua Skinner. They are at the top of the leaderboard with a total weight of 125.20 pounds. Their big fish pulled the scales to 52.20 pounds.

Passmore and Skinner are no strangers to Santee Cooper, they fish the lake often with good results. They began day one in shallow water in an area they had found fish while prefishing. It was actually one of their favorite spots to fish. By 11:00 they had one small under 36-inch fish in the boat.

“We made the decision to move on,” reported Passmore. “We went looking and found some bait stacked up in a deeper area of the lake. We anchored on it and within 30 minutes had caught the 52, our biggest of the day. We were fishing perch and river herring with our best luck coming on river hearing.”

“The bite was come and go,” concluded Passmore. “But we ground it out on that spot for the remainder of the tournament, sticking with what we knew. Using that strategy, we bagged three more good fish. We had no idea we had enough in the livewell for first place.”

Anglers will hit the water again on Saturday to determine the final winners. Championship belts will be awarded to the Big Fish winners and youth winners. Interested anglers can go to Santee Cooper Monster Cat Facebook page and watch the final weigh-in on Saturday.

Congrats to Passmore and Skinner on their day-one lead and good luck to the other anglers as they finish out the tournament on day two.
